Leadership Lessons from Whales
- Whales are known to teach, learn, cooperate, scheme, and even grieve. As a leader you cannot achieve things on your own. Work together.
- All mammals sleep, but whales cannot afford to become unconscious for long because they may drown. It is thought that only one hemisphere of the whale's brain sleeps at a time, so they rest but are never completely asleep. As a leader you cannot afford to sleep. Be alert and proactive. Keep your senses open.
- Many whales exhibit behaviors such as breaching and tail slapping that expose large parts of their bodies to the air. As a leader, make your presence known to the world. Though there have been many leaders who have been silently doing the work, telling the world of your presence can achieve many things.
- Some species, such as the humpback whale, communicate using melodic sounds, known as whale song. As a leader communicate pleasantly. A pleasant communication can motivate subordinates, change things. Pleasantness does not indicate your weakness
- A recent discovery of a positive influence on the productivity of ocean fisheries has been attributed to whales in what has been termed a "whale pump." Whales, they found, carry nutrients such as nitrogen from the depths where they feed back to the surface. As a leader, find resources, utilise resources, rotate resource so that the entire organization is benefited
- From the depths of the ocean it comes up to the surface to breath. As a leader scan your environment, find out what is going on around you. Dont get buried in your own work
- Blue whale has the largest brain in the world. As a leader it is good to be intelligent !
- Young whales are raised within an extended, multi-tiered network of doting female caregivers, including the mother, aunts and grandmothers, who help in the nurturing of babies and, researchers suspect, in teaching them patterns of movement, hunting techniques and communication skills. As a leader, nurture young professionals, Tomorrow they are going to be the giants who will help your division
